Celebration, Recognition and Socialization

"Come Cruise With Us" Convention was a Success!

The 2005 WFI State Convention & Table Tops, which took place over Valentine's weekend, February 11-13 at the Radisson in Green Bay, WI, was a weekend of celebration, recognition and socialization.

The weekend was a mix of social opportunities, educational sessions and a chance to recognize those who have excelled in the industry and given back for its betterment.

All of Saturday and Sunday's speakers were very well received. Attorney Daniel Finerty's presentation on defending unemployment claims Saturday morning got a lot of our members thinking and gave them some answers to their questions about unemployment claims. Cheryl McCollum from the WI Bankers Association gave an eye-opening talk on identity theft. Identity theft is the fastest growing crime in America and she left us with simple and effective ways to avoid becoming victims. Our members really got into Lorraine Muir's hands-on presentation. They broke into groups and worked on some problem garments, which got everyone involved. Green Bay Packers Quarterback Coach Darrell Bevell rounded out the convention. As you can imagine, this being WI, he was a big hit. He talked about what the coaches and players schedules are like during the regular and off seasons.

Saturday afternoon we had our Table Top reception and education and programs auction. Our cleaners got a chance to see the newest wares of our Allied Trades members. The reception was followed by the auction. We auctioned off nearly 150 donated items, which raised $23,290 for WFI's education programs and events! The auction committee worked very hard to garner some great donations this year, which helped to make it such a success.

Saturday evening conference attendees gathered to recognize some special people. Virgil Lauth and Jerry Butz were inducted into WFI's Hall of Fame, by Hall of Fame Committee Chairperson and Past President Arlene Tutkowski. Dan Martino and Jim Fitzgerald, Jr. discussed the Herb Fitzgerald Scholarship program. WFI was able to offer 2, $2,000 scholarships this year for those planning on attending IFI's Finishing Seminars. The winners were randomly drawn from all the applicants who met the qualifications. Racquel Springfield of Classic Cleaners in Wausau, WI and Diego Torres from One Hour Martinizing in Milwaukee, WI were the lucky winners of this year's scholarships. More hospitality and cards rounded out Saturday evening. Join us in September for the WFI Fall Conference & Golf Outing at the Osthoff Resort in Elkhart Lake, WI.
